On being a graduate student

For me becoming a graduate student is not a transition from undergrad work. It's a transition for LIFE! I am going from writing short notes to accountants that require very little skill or thought to trying to write pages of thoughts. Thank god for computers that can spell check if I push the right buttons. When I did my undergrad work, I attended at night between 6 and 9 pm three nights a week after working a full time job. University work was always easier for the night students. Primarily because we we in the work force and that was like an internship as they call it these days. Transitions are happening all over, in work, in economies, in applications of technology. I have always been comfortable making transitions, but I have to admit this one is a big one.

  1. You will be fine, from what i see of you and your knowledge, you are adapting well. Since i did all my undergrad just recently at this age, it wasn't too bad of jump, but it really harder at the graduate level.

  2. Terry;
    You and I see this journey in the same light. It is a life altering change. For me, my new motto is to learn straight to the grave! I actually love being in a library surrounded by thousands of books; a real first for me! I talk a lot about the increased workload in grad school but not nearly enough about the increased knowledge gained that goes with it!!

  4. Graduate studies is definitely a challenge on your tolerance and at some point you are going to wonder why all these. But ultimately it will pay-off. Just keep the end in mind and victory will be your outcome. The awesome thing about all these is that there are so many ways of learning and teaching.
